Former NBA star Dwyane Wade, a Chicago native, is set to become a member of the ownership group of the Chicago Sky, according to a report by ESPN’s Alexa Philippou. The transaction is pending approval from the WNBA board of governors.
In June, the Chicago Sky sold a 10% stake in the team to a group of investors, including Laura Ricketts, co-owner of the Chicago Cubs, for $85 million. The exact percentage of Wade’s ownership in the team has yet to be disclosed.
Wade expressed his desire to support the WNBA and take his involvement to the next level. He highlighted the importance of not just talking about support but also actively participating in it. Joining the ownership group of the Sky provides him with an opportunity to contribute significantly to the growth of the league.
As a minority owner in the NBA’s Utah Jazz and MLS’s Real Salt Lake, Wade brings his experience and passion for sports ownership to the WNBA. He is thrilled to be part of the league during its early stages and is confident in its potential for growth.
Currently, the Sky holds a record of 8-12, placing them in fifth position out of six teams in the Eastern Conference this season. The team has a strong history, making the playoffs in four consecutive seasons and securing the WNBA championship in 2021.
Wade’s connection to Chicago runs deep, as he grew up in the city and played for the Chicago Bulls for parts of two seasons. Later this year, he will be honored with induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
