Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, the iconic figure of hip-hop pioneers Run-DMC, recently found himself amidst media controversy after his words about Lionel Messi’s unifying prowess were misconstrued as a declaration to run for president. The legendary rapper, who witnessed Messi’s Major League Soccer debut against the New York Red Bulls, spoke to reporters about how sports can bridge divides in society. However, a statement he made as an illustrative point was taken out of context by certain media outlets.
In a conversation with AllHipHop, DMC laughed off the misunderstanding and vehemently denied any intention of running for presidency. He candidly expressed his view on the current state of media, saying, “That’s so funny laughs! That’s why media today is a joke. They just run with anything before even confirming it. I would never run for president. I get more done as a representative of all people. The point I was trying to make is the arts succeed where politics and religion fails.”
Elaborating further, DMC highlighted how the arts and events like concerts, museums, plays, sports, and comic conventions bring diverse individuals from different backgrounds together, showcasing the interconnectedness of the world we inhabit. He contrasted this with how politics and religion are often employed divisively.
The music icon’s recent statement stirred buzz in the midst of an already eventful month. Run-DMC, an integral part of hip-hop history, graced the stage at LL COOL J’s Rock The Bells Festival in August. They once again united for the “Hip-Hop 50 Live” concert at Yankee Stadium, commemorating the 50th birthday of hip-hop. This event marked Run-DMC’s farewell performance.
DMC has now shifted his focus towards his upcoming solo album, titled “America.” With a lineup that includes notable figures from both the hip-hop and rock realms, such as Joan Jett, Sammy Hagar (Van Halen), Mick Mars (Mötley Crüe), Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses), and more, the album promises to be an eclectic fusion of genres.
With enthusiasm, DMC shared his vision for the album with Rock The Bells in May, stating, “It’s gonna be sick.” The artist’s dedication to music’s unifying power aligns with his previous remarks, highlighting his commitment to fostering inclusivity through artistic expression and connection. As DMC navigates the waves of media speculation, his genuine intent to bridge divides remains steadfast and clear.
