In an exclusive announcement, South Africa’s Videovision Entertainment is set to introduce its new TV sales division at the upcoming Mip Africa event. This division will showcase a diverse catalog of over 100 feature films and more than 10,000 hours of television programs, drawing from South Africa’s rich cinematic history. Videovision Entertainment, a long-standing and successful production house in the country, is behind this initiative.
Anant Singh, CEO of Videovision, has successfully secured a representation deal for e.tv’s daily soap, “House of Zwide,” a show the company produces. The slate will also feature numerous other titles produced by Videovision over the past four decades. Notable selections include “Sarafina!” starring Leleti Khumalo, Whoopi Goldberg, and Miriam Makeba; “Cry, the Beloved Country” featuring James Earl Jones, Richard Harris, and Vusi Kunene; “Red Dust” with Hilary Swank and Chiwetel Ejiofor, directed by Tom Hooper; and “Yesterday,” which earned South Africa its first Academy Award nomination.
On the documentary front, Videovision will present titles such as “Countdown to Freedom” and “My Hunter’s Heart,” co-directed by Craig Foster, known for his work on “My Octopus Teacher.”
Anant Singh expressed his excitement about the launch, stating, “We are thrilled to be launching a television content division at MIP Africa. It is time that African content is taken seriously. For us, a television content division is a natural progression as we adapt to the changing content market. Videovision’s own library of compelling feature films and documentaries will be available for the first time. We believe that there is huge potential in the African television space for material produced on our continent, Africa.”
Anant Singh has a remarkable legacy of nearly four decades in filmmaking and television production in South Africa. He is widely recognized for producing “Mandela: A Long Walk to Freedom,” directed by Justin Chadwick and featuring Idris Elba as Nelson Mandela and Naomie Harris as Winnie Mandela. The film premiered in Toronto in 2013, earning an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe win.
Mip Africa is scheduled for September 4-6 in Cape Town, where these exciting South African titles will take center stage.
