Kanye West recently made headlines by reaching out to billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk through fashion designer Ian Connor, asking for his help to mend his relationship with ex-wife Kim Kardashian and gain access to his children. The hip-hop artist and fashion designer shared his message on Instagram, stating, “You can’t watch Kim keep my kids from me, not say anything, and call yourself my friend so I can bring my audience to your struggling platform”.
In a series of leaked text messages posted by Ian Connor, Kanye West, who was banned from Elon’s social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), in December 2022, appeared to be making an emotional plea for another chance. He also took the opportunity to clarify his mental health, stating, “I’m not bipolar. I have signs of autism from my car accident.”
Kanye’s reference to “signs of autism” from a car accident pertains to an incident in 2002 when the rising rap star fell asleep at the wheel of his rented Lexus and crashed into an oncoming car, shattering his jaw in three places. This accident has been referenced in his songs over the years.
The artist also touched upon his personal matters, specifically addressing his relationship with Kim Kardashian, who has primary custody of their four children. He expressed his frustration, saying, “You can’t watch Kim keep my kids from me, and not say anything publicly and then call yourself my friend so I can bring my audience to your struggling platform”.
Kanye and Kim Kardashian, who filed for divorce in February 2021, share four children together: North, Psalm, Saint, and Chicago. This interaction seemed to be an emotional appeal from Kanye, as he questioned the nature of his relationship with Elon. The motivation behind these text messages remains unclear, but Ian Connor, who has a substantial following on Instagram, began sharing the gallery of screenshots after Kanye asked him to “get this out to the public”.
The history of friendship between Kanye and Elon dates back several years. They have been seen together at various events, including the TIME 100 Gala in New York in April 2015, where they were pictured alongside renowned filmmaker George Lucas. Their bond was further evident when Elon shared a photo of him and Kanye at his home in July 2020, with the picture taken by his then-girlfriend, the musical artist Grimes.
In December 2022, Elon suspended Kanye’s social media account after he posted a controversial image combining a swastika with a Star of David. This post followed an interview with conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, where Kanye expressed admiration for Nazis and Adolf Hitler, causing considerable public outrage.
Kanye’s candid messages to Elon Musk have opened a window into the artist’s personal life and struggles, hinting at a deeper complexity than what may be seen on the surface.
