Aretha Franklin’s Childhood Home Sells for $355k After Eight Months on the Market

The three-story house holds sentimental value as it was the place where Aretha Franklin lived from the age of five until she turned 18. The legendary singer, known for hits like “Respect,” was born in Tennessee but moved to this Detroit home during her formative years.

In 2011, during an interview with CBS This Morning, Aretha Franklin fondly recalled her childhood memories in the house. She described it as a showplace and a beautiful home. The property had historical significance as it was visited by successful gospel singers such as Mahalia Jackson and Clara Ward when Franklin was younger.

The house features six bedrooms and five bathrooms, including two half baths. A detached garage, also known as a carriage house, provides space for four cars and includes a one-bedroom unit above it. The front of the house boasts a brick pathway leading to a shaded porch, creating a welcoming entrance.

In 2021, a biopic titled “Respect,” starring Jennifer Hudson, featured a replica of the Detroit home to portray Franklin’s childhood years. The property had been listed before in 2013 for $46,874 and was sold “as is” as a bank-owned property.

Notably, the New Bethel Baptist Church, where Aretha Franklin’s father served as a pastor, is located near the childhood home. It was in this church that her illustrious career as one of the greatest singers in the world began.

Aretha Franklin’s childhood home, located in Detroit, has been sold for $355,000 after spending eight months on the real estate market. The iconic property, where the Queen of Soul spent her early years, was originally listed for $379,900 in January, but the new owners negotiated a price cut of around $24,000.

Throughout her lifetime, Aretha Franklin released an impressive 38 studio albums and 131 singles. She earned numerous accolades, becoming the first female inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. Her musical influence extended to the U.K. Music Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2012.

Franklin’s passing in August 2018 marked the end of an era, but her legacy lives on through her music and the cherished memories of her childhood home. The recent legal proceedings surrounding her will have added another layer of complexity to the estate’s management, highlighting the importance of proper estate planning.
