Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union, celebrated as one of Hollywood’s iconic couples, have faced their share of relationship trials. The couple recently took some time together in New York while promoting their new skincare venture, Proudly.
Wade, aged 41, recently delved into one of the most testing periods in their enduring relationship, a time when he fathered a child with another woman. During this difficult period, the couple was technically on a break, allowing the basketball legend to form a relationship with Aja Metoyer, who later became the mother of his youngest son, Xavier Zechariah Wade.
The former NBA MVP candidly discussed this challenging chapter on the Club Shay Shay podcast, highlighting that sharing this situation with Gabrielle, who is 50 years old, was even more arduous than competing in the NBA playoffs that year.
Wade emphasized the fear and apprehension he experienced during this time. He recounted, “I mean, you’re thinking about it. All right. It’s all scary. The whole situation is scary enough.” He added that, regardless of external opinions, the most crucial aspect was to have an open and honest conversation with his now-wife.
The couple eventually tied the knot nearly a year later in 2014. Wade credited Gabrielle Union for her role in making their relationship work, despite the challenges they faced. He shared that he attempted to handle the situation delicately and contemplated ending the relationship but Gabrielle consistently showed up.
To address the issues that arose during this period, the couple continues to attend therapy. Wade acknowledged that their journey has been far from perfect but stressed the importance of ongoing effort and communication.
“We’ve had shouts about it. We’ve had regular conversations about it. And so it’s been something that is going to continue to be something that I have to work at, and it doesn’t go away because years come or because I say ‘sorry,'” he emphasized.
Together, Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union have built a loving family that includes Dwyane’s eldest children, Zaire, 21, and Zaya, 16, from his first marriage to high school sweetheart Siohvaughn Funches-Wade, as well as their ward Dahveon Morris, 22, and their daughter Kaavia, born via surrogate in 2018.
Despite their resilience, Wade expressed concern about how Xavier, now 10, will perceive the story of his birth. Nevertheless, he remains steadfast in his commitment to navigating their family’s unique journey. “Ultimately, what I do know is at the end of the day, this is my family. This is my story. We’re gonna get through this how we gonna get through it, but we gonna get through it,” Wade affirmed.
