Kerry Washington Admits To Having An Abortion

Published:

Kerry Washington graced the Today Show to promote her upcoming memoir, “Thicker Than Water”, set to hit bookstores on September 26. The 46-year-old Scandal alum looked radiant in a turquoise blue short-sleeved turtleneck paired with a high-waisted, long red skirt adorned with a pink and green floral pattern.

Completing her stylish look were grey boots and a handbag in a matching shade. She wore her hair parted on the side, styled straight, and greeted fans gathered outside the studio with a warm smile while a handler shielded her from the rain with a black umbrella.

During interviews promoting her memoir, Kerry has been unveiling revelations from her book. Notably, she candidly shared that she had an abortion in her 20s, a decision she made when she unexpectedly became pregnant shortly after landing the lead role in Spike Lee’s 2004 film, “She Hate Me.”

The decision to include this deeply personal experience in her memoir wasn’t an easy one, as Kerry initially grappled with how it would fit into her life story. She eventually realized the importance of sharing her story, stating, “I don’t want my not telling it to make anybody think there is shame to be had.”

Kerry also emphasized the significance of openly discussing reproductive choices, especially in the current climate where reproductive rights are under threat in various states following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade. She hopes to destigmatize abortion, stating, “It’s just so important to me that abortion is not a bad word.”

Now, two decades later, Kerry is a mother of three, including a teenage stepdaughter, and her own children, Isabelle, aged nine, and Caleb, aged six, with her husband, former NFL player Nnamdi Asomugha.
