Acclaimed screenwriter, producer, and actress Lena Waithe surprised fans by revealing her marriage to longtime partner Alana Mayo during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Waithe shared that the couple opted for a private ceremony in San Francisco, choosing the courthouse with historical significance to the LGBTQ community.
The couple got married in front of Harvey Milk’s bust, recognizing the location as a symbol of LGBTQ rights. San Francisco City Hall, where the ceremony took place, witnessed the first legal same-sex marriage in 2004 and was also the site of protests supporting Milk’s advocacy.
Waithe expressed gratitude for the progress made by activists in the LGBTQ community that allowed her to celebrate her love openly. The couple had been dating for three years before getting engaged on Thanksgiving day in 2017.
