Sean Penn Questions Double Standards at Oscars, Citing Will Smith Incident

Published:

Sean Penn has expressed his frustration with what he perceives as a double standard at the Oscars, particularly regarding Will Smith’s recent incident where he slapped Chris Rock. Penn brought up his own past, referencing his 1987 conviction for assaulting an extra on a film set, for which he served 33 days in jail.

Penn expressed anger that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was not allowed to appear at the 2022 Oscars and questioned why Smith received applause for his actions at the ceremony. He mentioned that had Zelensky been present, the atmosphere would have been different, and such an incident would likely not have occurred.

The actor, who has been a strong supporter of Ukraine, presented Zelensky with his Oscars during a visit in November 2022 and received the Order of Merit from the Ukrainian president. Penn also has a documentary on the Ukraine conflict titled “Superpower,” set to release on Paramount+.
