Right-wing attorney Sidney Powell, a co-defendant with former President Donald Trump and others in the Georgia election interference case, has unexpectedly pleaded guilty to criminal charges stemming from her involvement in efforts to reverse Trump’s loss in the 2020 presidential election. This surprising about-face came just a day before the commencement of jury selection for her trial. Powell’s plea deal could intensify the pressure on her co-defendants to negotiate their own plea bargains in a case that has kept political commentators and legal experts on edge.
Powell, 68, entered a guilty plea to six misdemeanor counts, which included five counts of conspiracy to commit intentional interference with the performance of election duties and one count of conspiracy to commit theft by taking. Her agreement with prosecutors mandates six years of probation, a $6,000 fine, and a $2,700 restitution payment to Georgia. Notably, as a first-time offender, Powell will not serve jail time.
Furthermore, Powell will be required to author an apology letter addressed to the state of Georgia and its citizens. Her cooperation in the case will also involve her providing truthful testimony in upcoming trials involving her co-defendants.
The charges against Powell originally included seven felony counts, including racketeering and conspiracy to commit election fraud. She was accused of participating in a wide-ranging scheme to unlawfully breach election equipment in Coffee County, Georgia, and tamper with voting machines. The indictment revealed that she was present at a December 18, 2020, meeting at the White House, during which participants discussed strategies to influence the outcome of the election.
Powell’s sudden acceptance of a plea deal marks a significant shift in the case. She is the second of the 19 co-defendants to plead guilty, following bail bondsman Scott Hall, who admitted to five misdemeanor conspiracy charges in September.
