Simone Biles Sets Sights on Paris Olympics, Prioritizing Self-Care and Mental Health

Published:

Gymnastics icon Simone Biles, 26, has officially declared her intention to compete in the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France. This decision comes after her triumphant return to the sport last month, following a two-year hiatus.

During an appearance on the Today show, Biles expressed her enthusiasm for participating in the upcoming Olympics when host Hoda Kotb asked if she should bet on her competing. Biles coyly responded, “Right now, I would say that’s the path I would love to go on.”

Co-host Craig Melvin enthusiastically affirmed her plans by declaring, “She’s going to Paris,” prompting a cheerful response from Biles.

Biles made headlines during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics when she withdrew from several events due to mental health issues, including a condition known as “the twisties.” This mental block left her feeling disoriented while performing gymnastics routines. She later hinted that her decision was also influenced by the trauma of sexual abuse she endured from former national team doctor Larry Nassar. Biles was one of over 150 gymnasts who came forward as survivors of Nassar’s abuse.

In her pursuit of the Paris Olympics, Biles emphasized the importance of self-care and mental well-being. She acknowledged that she needed to prioritize her mental and physical health, stating, “I have to take care of myself a little bit more and listen to my body.” Biles also shared her commitment to attending therapy to ensure she is mentally aligned and prepared for the challenges ahead.

Simone Biles’ return to gymnastics was influenced by her husband, NFL star Jonathan Owens, whom she married in April. Owens encouraged her to reignite her passion for the sport. Biles has already showcased her remarkable talent by winning titles at the US Classic and the US Championship all-around events.

Despite occasional self-doubt, Biles remains committed to her journey, demonstrating resilience and determination as she prepares for the Paris Olympics, aiming for nothing less than excellence.
