Sports commentator Stephen A. Smith found himself in hot water after a recent tweet promoting his show. In the now-deleted tweet, he posed a question about Kim Kardashian and her mother, Kris Jenner, in relation to an accusation made by conservative political commentator Candace Owens almost a year ago. Smith’s tweet asked whether Kardashian was a “prostitute” and if Jenner was a “pimp”.
The controversial comments stem from an interview with Ray-J in May 2022, in which he alleged that Jenner orchestrated the release of his infamous sex tape with Kardashian. Strangely, Owens reacted to the article four months later, branding Kardashian a “prostitute” and her mother a “pimp.”
Smith’s response to Owens’ comments came a full ten months after she made them, sparking criticism and backlash from NBA point guard Patrick Beverley, who called out the ESPN personality for his insensitivity, especially given Kardashian’s status as a mother.
Recognizing his mistake, Smith apologized and acknowledged it as a “clerical error.” He deleted the tweet and clarified his stance, stating that he does not view Kardashian or any woman in such a derogatory manner.
However, during his show, Smith and his sister, who was a guest on the program, discussed the accusation made by Owens and the allegations made by Ray-J. While they didn’t fully endorse Owens’ statement, they acknowledged some level of agreement with the theory if Ray-J’s claims were accurate.
The incident has drawn attention to the importance of responsible social media use and the need to avoid perpetuating harmful stereotypes or making derogatory remarks about individuals, regardless of their public status. As the story continues to unfold, it serves as a reminder of the power and responsibility that public figures hold when expressing their views in the public domain.
